0072 Buffalo Wallow
Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, SD
Buffalo wallows are sites worn bare of vegetation by bison as they return time and again, year after year to roll and wallow in the dust when the ground is dry, or mud if the depression contains water. Each time an animal completed this task and departed, it carried away dirt from the depression, thus enlarging the wallow. Why bison do this is anybody’s guess. However, some believe it to be an attempt to relieve the discomfort of biting insects.
