The Kermode, a subspecies of the American black bear, produces approximately one white, or cream-colored, offspring in every 10 births. Although the recessive gene responsible for this coloration is found in both black and white individuals, only the white, Spirit Bears are protected. The life of the black Kermode depicted in this limited edition photograph is uncertain.
