0025 Red Sky Morning
Yellowstone National Park, WY
Elk are occasionally referred too as Wapiti (WAA-pi-ti), which is the Shawnee word for ‘white deer’ or ‘‘white rump’ in reference to their white rump patch. However, most North Americans simply know them as elk, a derivation of the German word elch for the European moose which somewhat explains why they are called moose in Europe. Confusing matters ever further, elk are actually a subspecies of the European red deer.
