0028 Time for Breakfast
Corkscrew Swamp, FL
Little Blue Herons stalk their prey by slowly working an area, often retracing their steps, while sometimes standing motionless for minutes at a time. As a result, their prey capture success rate is about 60-percent. They eat everything from fish, frogs, and lizards, to crustaceans such as crabs, crayfish and shrimp. Should the opportunity present itself, snakes and turtles are never off limits, neither are aquatic insects and spiders. When marshes dry up, as they sometimes do, a Little Blue’s diet changes to grassland insects like grasshoppers, crickets, and beetles.
