White Ibis nest in huge colonies in both fresh water swamps and in coastal marshes, where they feast on a variety of invertebrates including crayfish and crabs that, as it so happens, devour huge quantities of fish eggs. As a result, ibis are a major player responsible for the increase of fish populations in areas where they choose to colonize. Likewise, their droppings fertilize the water, which in turn increases plankton growth, the basic food of all marsh life.
