0119 Love You, Mom
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Previous / Next

Female Galapagos sea lions give birth to a single pup, which comes into the world covered with fur and fully developed, a physical state known as precocial. Once the pup is born, mom will remain ashore with her newborn charge anywhere from a week to 10 days. Afterwards, she’ll begin foraging at sea for one to three days at a time followed by a day ashore nursing junior. As the pup matures, it will begin accompanying the female on these foraging expeditions, learning how to feed while supplementing its milk diet with fish.

Edition of 500.
