0087 Ancient One
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
The Galapagos giant tortoise can measure up to five and one-half feet across its carapace and weigh up to 660 pounds.  They can live to more than 100 years in age, with the oldest thought to have been 170 years old. Prior to the arrival of humans, it is estimated that about 250,000 tortoises lived in Galapagos archipelago. Current populations stand at around 20,000 individuals; and, of the 14 subspecies that were once believed to exist, only 11 remain. The others are extinct. Of the eleven remaining subspecies, one group is represented by only one, lone survivor.
