0039 Awaiting Parenthood
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Previous / Next
The Waved Albatross is unique in that, not only is it the only albatross species found entirely within the tropics, it nests exclusively on Española Island in the Galapagos archipelago, although a few pairs are thought to breed on Isla de la Plata, just off Ecuador’s southwest coast.

Unfortunately, population numbers are currently decreasing at an alarming and unknown rate. A combination of problems seem to be responsible, some of which include illegal fishing in the archipelago, disturbances via tourism, harvesting for human consumption, recent oil spills, El Niño events exacerbated by global warming; and, if that were not enough, large numbers of Waved Albatross are being accidentally, and deliberately, killed by commercial long-line fishing operations.

These factors combined with restricted breeding areas makes the population highly vulnerable to a catastrophic collapse to extinction. As a result, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) up-listed the Waved Albatross to Critically Endangered status in the 2007 IUNC Red List.
