0047 Valley of the Eagles
Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, Alaska
Previous / Next
Since time immemorial, Bald Eagles have been drawn to the Valley of the Eagles, near Haines, Alaska, where they feed upon a late run of salmon. Each winter they gather along the open waters of the Chilkat River to feed upon spawned-out salmon carcasses. Up to 5,000 eagles have been counted during peak congregation times in mid-November. The awesome sight of cottonwood trees filled to capacity with eagles as hundreds more stand sentinel along the river, each waiting its turn to tear apart fish carcasses with their powerful beaks and talons is a spectacle never to be forgotten.
