0093 Conflict
Coastal California
Each winter, elephant seals arrive at their breeding beaches along the coasts Mexico and California. Males are the first to come ashore. Upon arrival, dramatic fights of supremacy begins as each bull enters the ring in hopes of achieving victory in the form of territory and harem. Although fights seldom turn into mortal battles, they are often brutal with significant injury and bloodshed. During this time, dominant males inflate their proboscis and produce loud roaring sounds, not unlike that of some deep-sounding, vibrating snort to warn lesser males away.
