0092 Funny Face
Coastal California
Female elephant seals begin arriving at their breeding beaches soon after the males have secured their territory. In a process known only to elephant seals, females will select an alpha bull. A bull may have as many as 100 cows in his harem. One of the bulls that scored second in the battle for supremacy will be designated the beta bull, whose job is to protect the perimeter of the harem for any belated challengers. Although most bulls will never mate due to the hierarchy established in combat, an alpha bull can easily sire over 500 pups during his lifetime. The lifetime reproduction potential of females is about ten pups.
