0045 Back from the Sea
Coastal Californis
Previous / Next
Northern elephant seals, having spent much of the year at sea, begin arriving at their breeding grounds in December and January, where they will stay two or three months before returning to their homes in the sea. Only during the summer between April and August will they come ashore again, this time to undergo, what is called a "catastrophic molt," during which time they will shed much of their fur and upper skin layer, while remaining on the beach in order to preserve body heat as they wait for the new fur to grow.

Edition of 500
