0015 Tender Moments
Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana
A lioness typically gives birth to three or four cubs following a 110-day gestation period. The young cubs are vulnerable to predation by hyenas, leopards and black-backed jackals, which may account for this lioness only having one cub. This cub, if it survives, will begin hunting at 11 months of age and remain with its mother for at least two years. If the cub is a female, it will typically stay with the pride. However, if it is a male, it will eventually leave and establish its own pride, usually by taking over a pride headed by another male.
