Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, located in south-central New Mexico and straddling the Rio Grande River, lies in the shadow of the nearby Magdalena Mountains. It’s name, meaning “Woods of the Apache,” dates back to the days when early Spanish settlers routinely observed Apaches camping in the woods along the river. The refuge is known for its huge winter concentrations of sandhill cranes, snow geese, and colorful, western sunrises.
