Last year, 2007, was one of my busiest years ever. I conducted two workshops in South America, a photo safari in Africa, three separate adventures in Alaska, plus workshops in Colorado, Maine, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, and Texas. In addition, the Eagle Valley Library District and Gore Range Natural Science School invited me to participate as a guest speaker in their High Country Speaker Series, which took place in Avon, Colorado, while the Colorado Field Ornithologists invited me to do the same for them in the Ricketson Auditorium at the Denver Museum of Science & History. I was also invited to speak before a number of different photography clubs in Colorado.

One of the highlights of my career occurred last year when the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers & Photographers organization awarded me with their Selected Works Award for Excellence in Photography. That same organization has also invited me to conduct a photography workshop during their upcoming Conference in Estes Park, Colorado.

One last tidbit, check out my article, “In Search of The Winning Image” in the current issue, Spring 2008, of Nature Photographer magazine; and, don’t miss “When Magic Happens:  The Moment of Discovery” in the upcoming Summer issue.

May 6, 2008

It’s been exactly one week since returning from South America where I led two separate, wildlife photography workshops – one in the Ecuadorian cloud forests of Tandayapa Valley where subjects included an amazing variety of exotic hummingbirds, followed by an 8-day cruise in the magical Galapagos Islands.

During this year’s adventure, I experienced my first sighting ever of a White-necked Jacobin. Other exotics that shared their time with us included numerous Violet-tailed Sylphs and Booted Racket-tails, along with Buff-tailed Coronets, Rufous-tailed Hummingbirds, Fawn-breasted Brilliants, both Andean and Western Emeralds, as well as Green, Brown, and Sparkling Violet-ears, to name but a few.

In the Galapagos Islands, it was wonderful to once-again to walk among the Waved Albatross on Española Island where they return each year to mate and raise their offspring.

This year’s Galapagos adventure provided my first opportunity ever, to both see and photograph Galapagos fur seals. Nature also provided my group the opportunity to photograph an adult Blue-footed Booby brooding its recently hatched chick that was, surely, no more than a few hour’s old.

One of the most magical moments in my life, however, occurred when I had the opportunity to witness a special moment between two Galapagos Penguins. One penguin, an adult that I assumed to be a female, stood on one of the volcanic rocks surrounding Bartolome Island, along the water’s edge. Standing with her was a juvenal, which I believed to be her offspring. After interacting for sometime with the adult, the youngster eventually dove into the water and swam away. When this occurred, the female spread her short wings, raised her head to the heavens and began squalling. In no time, another penguin, one that I assumed to be her mate and previously hidden behind the rock upon which she stood, waddled-up behind her, placed his arms (wings) around her, and stood there comforting her as she lay her head on one of his arms, bathing herself in his compassion.

I’m currently in the process of going through the images made during my recent South American adventure, several, of which, will be added to my eGallery for summer release, so be sure and check it frequently.

Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to see you in person sometime this year.

That's all for now,

Weldon
